A bid to create 750 homes in Ilfracombe looks set to be approved in principle when councillors meet next Wednesday (July 30).

North Devon Council’s planning committee visit the site of the proposed ‘southern extension’ between the A361 and B3230 in the morning before heading to the Landmark for a special planning meeting at 2pm.

The proposed development is for 750 homes, along with community facilities such as shops, business units, a primary school and a health centre.

Also outlined are green open spaces plus cycle and pedestrian routes.

The site stretches from the developed southern edge of town near John Fowlers and Tesco up to the lower end of Cleave Wood, near Score Valley Country House, backing on to Bicclescombe and filling in most of the space between the A361 and New Barnstaple Road.

It is estimated it could take up to 13 years to build, with some 60 houses constructed each year.

The application is has been lodged by Resign Ltd, which includes artist Damien Hirst, who owns some of the site.

The meeting on Wednesday, July 30 is public. Full details of the application, number 56675, including plans and progress are available to view at http://planning.northdevon.gov.uk/detail.asp?AltRef=56675&ApplicationNumber=56675&AddressPrefix=&submit1=Go
