REPAIRS to the Old Quay Head at Ilfracombe Harbour are expected to be completed by July.

North Devon Council, which owns the harbour, said work by contractor Dyer and Butler was progressing well despite challenging weather conditions.

The inner concrete support wall is half-built and work will now begin to install rock anchors as the rest of the concrete wall is constructed.

Once this is complete it will be faced with natural stone to match the existing structure. The stone will be sourced from a local quarry.

“Although progress has been slow at times because of the weather and the tides, we’re on schedule to complete this important project by the end of July,” said Councillor Mike Edmunds, executive member for Ilfracombe.

“Old Quay Head is an important historic structure in the town, as well as playing a key role in keeping the harbour and surrounding properties safe from flooding.”

Chairman of the Harbour Board, Councillor Geoff Fowler, added: “This remedial work serves to prove that certain areas of the harbour are susceptible to extreme weather damage and we need to be proactive in identifying long-term solutions to protect all its working structures and facilities.

“I’m glad to see that this project is nearing completion and I would like to thank local businesses, fishermen and residents for their continued patience and support as we carry out these essential works.”
