Annual Ilfracombe meeting sees Lynda Courtnadge step down after two years and George Squires takes on the role.

THE new Mayor of Ilfracombe has officially taken up the reins following the town’s annual Mayor Making on Monday.

Councillor George Squires takes on the role after two years served by outgoing mayor Lynda Courtnadge, and the new deputy mayor is Cllr Martin Duce.

As she handed over the office of mayor, Mrs Courtnadge thanked her fellow councillors for their great support, as well as council staff for their enthusiasm, support and commitment, plus Mayor’s Chaplain Geoff Hills and her husband Richard.

During her tenure the town saw the One Ilfracombe community budgets scheme come into being, as well as the purchase of the former bus station.

To round off her term, Cllr Ron Ley presented a light-hearted film looking back at over the two years with tributes from family and friends.

Mr Squires is a retired teacher and is in his first term as a councillor.

He has said the job for the next year will be to reap the benefits of possibly one of the most productive years the town has had, while working to minimise the effects of threatened cuts to public services.
