Pedestrian fighting for his life after being hit by ambulance

An Ilfracombe man is fighting for his life following a collision with an ambulance on the North Devon Link Road in the early hours of this morning (Thursday).

Police said the 40-year-old pedestrian suffered chest and head injuries in the incident on the south bound carriageway of the A361 near Tiverton, at around 1.20am.

The driver and passenger of the ambulance were uninjured.

The injured man was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, before being later transferred to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where he remains in a critical condition.

Local police officers, as well as officers from the Roads Policing Team, and Serious Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene, between Gornhay Cross and the Sampford Peverell junction, and closures were in place for around four hours.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident. Anyone with information is asked to email quoting log number 44 for 18 January.
