THE new Ilfracombe land train can now be seen bustling back and forth around the town.

The Italian made Dotto train started its career yesterday (Thursday) and is being operated by Filers Travel, covering a route taking in the High Street, seafront, harbour and Hillsborough.

The 40-seat train was purchased following a £163,000 grant from the EU Leader 4 Torridge and North Devon Programme, to support tourist development in Ilfracombe.

Yesterday it went into service without fanfare from around 11.30am and by the end of the day had carried some 100 people.

Drivers Dave Atkinson and Alan Isaac of Filers Travel were impressed with its first day of service: “Dave and I used to drive the little red one,” said Alan, who acted as ‘conductor’ for the day.

“I think it will be a lovely boost for Ilfracombe if people support it.”
