Ilfracombe endurance event salutes WW2 route march

Charity walk pays homage to legendary war training exercise.

WALKERS and runners set off from Ilfracombe on Wednesday on an endurance event organised to recreate a famous World War Two route march.

Around two dozen entrants headed out along the seafront on the first leg of a 139-mile five-day trek across Exmoor, to Bulford in Wiltshire.

They were joined by newly-appointed mayor George Squires, as well as youngsters from Ilfracombe Army Cadets, who marched as far as Combe Martin.

The fifth annual Forces March paid homage to a legendary march undertaken by the men of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in August 1942.

The whole regiment was sent to Devon for two months of cliff climbing and other strenuous training, before being ordered to march back to camp in Bulford.

Today, the march has become one of the UK’s top endurance events, offering participants the chance to take on five marathons in five days in aid of The Veterans’ Charity.
