Planners decide on Wednesday if Ilfracombe Town Council can demolish the old buildings on the ‘eyesore’ site and turn it into a temporary car park.
PLANS to demolish the old buildings at Ilfracombe bus station and turn the site into a temporary car park go before North Devon Council’s planning committee today (Wednesday).
Two applications propose to demolish the old workshop buildings, booking office and reduce the height of the perimeter walls, before turning the site into a car park with 95 space for cars plus motorcycle spaces and a cycle store.
Ilfracombe Town Council bought the site in November for £750,000 after borrowing £1million from the Public Works Loan Board, to allow for purchase, demolition and site development.
The planning applications have been submitted by town and district Councillor Paul Crabb, who is part of the town council’s bus station working group delegated for the task.
Both have recommendations for approval, with conditions including demolition and construction can only take place from 8am to 6pm on week days and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.
The car park plan proposes a temporary car park for three to four years, with an access from the corner of Ropery Road and Broad Street, plus an exit further down on to Ropery Road.
Additional works include widening of the pavement with railings behind plus a potential bus stop on Ropery Road, as well as partial widening of Albert Court and Water Lane.
Devon County Council’s highways department has raised some queries, including asking whether the car park is intended for residents or to encourage extra visitors.
It also suggested the bus stop location would cause visibility problems for cars leaving the car park, and whether busses would be able to make the turn.
In response Mr Crabb has said the bus stop location was partly dictated by the wishes of Stagecoach and the corner of Ropery Road was already capable of accommodating a bus turning circle.
