New cafe bistro with traditional Hungarian food opens near the seafront.
HOME cooking from Hungary is on the menu in Combe Martin with the arrival of Nanna’s Kitchen.
The new Hungarian café and bistro at Hangman Path near the seaside has been opened by Ildi McIndoe from Appledore, fulfilling a lifelong ambition.
Ildi has lived in England for most of her life, but has never lost a love for her native Hungary or its cuisine and even started up a series of Hungarian Supper Clubs at North Devon venues.
“I learned to cook Hungarian food from my mother, grandmother and my mother’s friend from an early age,” she said.
“I continued with my favourite dishes throughout, which my four children always loved.
“My mum Julianna and my dad divorced when I was two and she came over to England with me and just a suitcase in 1956 to escape the Hungarian Uprising against the Communists.”
Ildi and her family moved to North Devon six years ago after decades of holidaying in the area and she discovered many people had a liking for Hungarian cuisine.
Examples include flatbread, pancakes, ‘Rakott Krumpli’ – a layered potato bake – plus goulash of course, as well as paprikás csirke - chicken in paprika sauce,
“It’s traditional Hungarian dishes, home cooked – just the stuff that my mum would cook for us,” she added.
“All the people in Combe Martin have been very supportive, welcoming, pleased to see me and wished me well in my venture.”
Nanna’s Kitchen is currently open from Wednesday to Saturday.
