FIVE runners will be pounding the streets of the capital in aid of North Devon Hospice on Sunday.

Luke Hook, from Barnstaple; Laura Davison, from Bideford; Joey Jordan, from Woolacombe; Elaine Fields, from South Molton; and Dan Ferguson, from Barnstaple collectively hope to raise upwards of £10,000 for the charity.

Elaine, 41, said she had first-hand experience of the charity’s good work.

“My dad is currently under the great care of North Devon Hospice and he asked me to raise some money for them,” said Elaine.

Laura, 32, said: “My grampy passed away at home last year and the hospice offered fantastic support to the family.

“My best friend’s dad also passed away at the hospice in 2009 and the care and the environment during such a sad time was amazing.

“I am truly honoured to be given the opportunity to run the London Marathon for this amazing charity.”

Joey, 27, is an experienced runner but, this year, has added motivation to train.

He said: “To run this marathon for North Devon Hospice is an honour and one I think about during every training run.”

Dan, 34, said he was running in memory of his friend Gillian Eggleton.

“This is my way of saying a big thank you to the hospice for all the support they gave us,” he said.

Luke, 25, said: “The hospice does an incredible amount of work that goes largely unnoticed, not only for patients, but their families and friends during times of need.

“Choosing a charity to run the marathon for was really difficult, but I know a number of my friends are hugely grateful for the support of the hospice over the years when they have needed it.”

Emma Lowe, from the hospice’s fundraising team, said: “We are very proud of our team who are running this year’s London Marathon.

“The training needed to be able to run 26.2 miles is more than most people would ever imagine, so there has been a huge amount of dedication shown already, but these guys have also been working hard on their fundraising too.

“It is only thanks to support like this that we have been able to provide care for the last 30 years.”
