Public vote for North Devon Hospice to receive £3,000 through Lloyds Bank Community Fund

NORTH Devon Hospice has been handed a £3,000 grant from the Lloyds Bank Community Fund.

The Barnstaple-based hospice will be able to use the money to continue to help people affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses after beating off stiff competition from other local groups in the North Devon and Torridge area in a public vote.

North Devon Hospice and Children’s Hospice South West – Little Bridge House garnered the most votes, receiving £3,000 each, while Parochial Church Council Braunton and Tarka Radio also received £300 towards their work.

With more than 500 volunteers and a team of community nurses and medical staff, the hospice, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, aims to ensure that patients remain at the heart of everything they do.

Communications manager Leo Cooper said: “We did a lot of campaigning among our supporters but it was still good to get that level of support from the public and top the vote.

“It makes a difference to the charity - for each pound we raise, 85 pence goes directly towards a patient’s care so £3,000 will have a big impact.

“Our ethos with our services is about getting more nurses and support out into the community, with home support, counselling sessions and more community nurses.

“We live in a very rural area but it is important patients don’t have to travel too far so it is about making care more available.”

Now in its second year, the Lloyds Bank Community Fund has provided funding for more than 1,300 local good causes in 333 communities throughout England and Wales since beginning last year.

Four good causes were nominated by staff in each community with more than 2.3million votes cast in branches, online and by text message at the end of 2013.
