Councillors give the green light for 30 news homes at Westaway Plain in Pilton, Barnstaple

Councillors have approved plans for 30 news homes at Westaway Plain in Pilton.

Today (Wednesday) North Devon Council’s planning committee heard a revised bid from developer Summix, with a reduced number of homes from the 43 previously proposed.

In September councillors deferred the application to seek a reduced number of dwellings on the site.

Now it is set to the northern end of the field, with the lower part designated as open space.

Today members were told by officers they would have no planning grounds to refuse the scheme and it was passed by eight to three.

Several residents spoke in opposition to the plans, with overlooking, loss of privacy and the impact on local services and traffic some of the concerns raised.

Councillor Frank Biederman said it should be refused, because ‘blue light services’ relied on use of the hospital junction.

Local ward member Brian Greenslade also had traffic concerns: “Originally when development kicked off at this part of Barnstaple highways said the Pilton junction was at capacity,” he said.

“I think it should be refused because there’s parts overlooking Yoiungs Drive.”

But several councillors said they could not see grounds for refusal and Jeremy Yabsley said if the developers appealed such a decision, anything could happen.

Speaking for the applicants, agent Louise Steele said the 30 new dwellings would contribute to housing in the area and would also result in providing ‘informal’ public open space.
