Staff at Holsworthy Dental Centre celebrate its 40 year anniversary

ON Friday Holsworthy Dental Centre celebrated 40 years of dentistry in the village.

Staff posed for a photo to commemorate the special anniversary of the practice which Dr John Chope started all those years ago.

Dr Chope had worked as a researcher in the USA and later as a University teacher in Sudan where he helped form its first and only dental school.

In 1974 Dr Chope came to Holsworthy and started his dental practice in a small building next to what was left of Holsworthy railway station.

Once his practice had grown considerably he decided to consolidate four individual practices under one roof and in 2009 the Holsworthy Dental Centre was created.

Dr Chope remains enthusiastic about his work.

He said, “It must be because dentistry is a subject which for me never stands still.

“There has always been a new challenge around the corner and hopefully there will be many more corners to come.”

Last month the Holsworthy NHS Dental Care service had to temporarily close its books to new patients due to overwhelming demand.

Dr Chope plans to recruit a new NHS dentist and re-instate full access to NHS dentistry for Holsworthy.
