Three youngsters rescued by Chivenor Sea King after setting up barbecue under cliffs.

THREE young holiday makers from Essex were rescued after being cut off by the tide at Hartland Quay yesterday (Wednesday).

The trio had started a barbecue under the cliffs and both Hartland and Westward Ho! Coastguard were scrambled to the scene at around 6.30pm.

On arrival they decided it would be safer to have a helicopter evacuation and the youngsters were brought to the cliff top by the Chivenor Sea King.

The Coastguard crews were waiting and issued them with safety advice about the tides, reporting they were shaken but ‘in good spirits’.

A spokesman said: “These holiday makers discovered that when things got a little dangerous you can’t rely on your mobile phone.

“They tried to raise the alarm but had no service.

“They didn’t know what time high tide was and realised quite quickly that the situation was now out of their control.

“Had they stayed there they would have been swept away by the water as it gained height.

“Luckily there were plenty of other beach users that were able to raise the alarm for them by dialling 999 and asking for the Coastguard.

“It’s always worth checking the tide times before setting up camp on the beach, just in case.”
