HISTORY was made in Northam this week when the parish council held its first ever ‘introduction ceremony’ for its new mayor.

Northam ward Councillor John Himan was officially appointed mayor at a historic ceremony at the council offices in Windmill Lane on Wednesday night.

Mr Himan, who as a beadle for Barnstaple and Bideford town councils has often been charged with ensuring the safekeeping of the mayoral chains, said he was now ‘honoured’ to wear them himself.

In a speech to dignitaries, including the High Sheriff of Devon, he thanked town council staff and fellow councillors.

“They have put in a lot of time and effort to make this council stronger and this area a place to enjoy and be proud of,” he said.

His chosen charities for the year are the Chemotherapy Appeal and Appledore RNLI.

He said: “We are fortunate in having a chemotherapy unit being built at Barnstaple hospital. How comforting it is to know that the future generation will benefit from this legacy to support research, treatment and care.”

Of the RNLI he added: “They play a vital role in saving lives and we should remember that these amazing people who volunteer as crew members put their own lives at risk to save those who are in difficulty at sea.”

Appledore ward member Cllr Alison Boyle was appointed deputy during the same ceremony.
