FOR the first time the district councils of North Devon and Torridge have approved a ‘historic’ joint local plan.

At a meeting yesterday (Wednesday) in Barnstaple Hotel, the two councils met as one to approve the blueprint document that sets out how both districts will develop up to 2031.

The North Devon and Torridge Local Plan contains chapters on every town and major village and sets out where new houses can be built, where local community facilities can be provided and where employment land can be developed.

The plan will now go out for a second round of consultation following an initial one engagement exercise last year when more than 4,000 comments were received.

Following that feedback, the plan has been amended and is now going out for final consultation before it is submitted to the Secretary of State to be scrutinised by a planning inspector.

North Devon Council executive member for strategic planning, Councillor Mike Edmunds, commented: “This is the most important decision we will make during the life of this council and I’m very confident in the robustness of the plan. It’s now time to get it out to the public to get their views.”

His counterpart, lead member for the natural and built environment at Torridge District Council, Cllr Gaye Tabor, added: “It has been a pleasure working with North Devon on this plan. We have consulted and challenged as much as we can and have done our best to produce a plan that will stand the test of time.”

The plan is expected to be ready for six weeks of consultation starting at the end of May.
