DAMIEN Hirst’s 67-foot sculpture Verity is expected to arrive in Ilfracombe this weekend.

The bronze statue which has aroused so much interest and debate is likely to be delivered either overnight on Sunday or very early on Monday morning.

Three large low loader vehicles will deliver the sculpture in sections, which will be assembled on site.

The finished product, a pregnant naked woman holding aloft a sword, bearing the scales of justice and stood upon a plinth of law books, is provisionally scheduled to be hoisted into place between October 14-16.

Site security is expected to be tight once Verity arrives on Monday.Site security is expected to be tight once Verity arrives on Monday.

North Devon Council granted planning permission last month and agreed to accept a 20 loan of the artwork proposed by Mr Hirst’s organisation For Giving CIC.

Harbour master Rob Lawson said the final installation would be dependant on the weather, but it was hoped delivery of the statue segments could be carried out while there was little or no traffic about.

Safety barriers will be put up around the site before the sculpture is hoisted into position. Contractors will spend a further week finishing off the installation, with landscaping and signage to follow at a later date.

Sections of the pier car park have already been closed for ground work on the site of Verity’s plinth. It was closed overnight until this morning (Wednesday) for the area to be cleared ahead of a temporary compound being erected.

The car park will also be closed on Monday from just after midnight until 8am and again from midnight until 8am on Sunday, October 14.

Mr Lawson said the aim was have the car park back in use by October half term week – and certainly before the boats come out of the harbour for winter storage.

“There’s a massive amount of work in the whole operation, but there’s a lot of good people working on the project so I don’t foresee any problems,” he said.

“Once the statue is up and people see it for real, I think many will be pleasantly surprised and may even change their views on it.”
