SEA King helicopter flight crews have taken part in an unusual training mission at the Fullabrook wind farm.

Local RAF rescue teams were given permission to practise winching rescue personnel from the 110-metre turbines, which are situated adjacent to the Search and Rescue Flight (SARF) base at RMB Chivenor.

A spokesperson for wind farm owners ESB, said the RAF SARF had established a standard operating procedure which is practised by other rescue units on sea-based wind farms all over the UK.

“As there are currently no operational off-shore wind farms in the local area, ESB allowed the RAF SARF to practice winching their rescue personnel from it’s turbines at Fullabrook Down.

“This exercise was of mutual training benefit and ESB were delighted to be able to facilitate the RAF in this instance.”

Earlier that week ESB hosted a safety day at the Imperial Hotel in Barnstaple, bringing together members of the local emergency services to discuss the emergency procedures at the wind farm.

The meeting was followed up with a tour of the wind farm site.
