Members of the public have until the end of the month to have their say on a £250million scheme to improve the North Devon Link Road.

Devon County Council is asking for feedback on detailed proposals to widen certain sections of the A39 and A361 between Bideford and South Molton to create extra overtaking lanes.

There are also plans to improve junctions and remove all right-turn movements across the link road.

A public consultation launched last month is due to end on Friday, July 28. Four exhibitions have already been held but the proposals will be on display at an unmanned exhibition at Taw View from Monday, July 24 until July 28.

Feedback will enable the county council to refine the scheme for an outline business case to be submitted to the Department for Transport in December.

It is understood that only 150 people have responded to the consultation so far.

Councillor Andrea Davis, cabinet member for infrastructure, development and waste management, said: “Because of the importance of this route on northern Devon’s economy we want to hear from as many people as possible.

“With just over two weeks of the consultation remaining, if you haven’t taken part, then please do so while there’s still time.

“It’s a good opportunity to have a look at the scheme option and provide us with feedback which can help inform the outline business case which will go to the Department for Transport.”

The outline business case will prioritise sections of the preferred scheme. This is likely to result in three separate costed options being submitted with one being a preferred option.

If the application is successful and government funding is available, the preferred option will be further developed and planning permission sought.

The scheme proposals include:

– Widening the road between Filleigh Viaduct and Swimbridge Cutting, Swimbridge and Landkey and Landkey Junction and Portmore Roundabout. Junctions at Borner’s Bridge and Landkey would be upgraded to roundabouts and there would be a grade separated junction at West Buckland.

– The existing road around Barnstaple would be widened to provide two lanes in each direction with a central double white line. This would be a high capacity urban four lane road with a speed restriction.

– Bishop’s Tawton Roundabout would also be improved by increasing the size, and a new roundabout could be provided east of Brynsworthy Lane to provide access to the proposed development.

– The road between the new Brynsworthy Roundabout and Westleigh Junction would be widened to provide further overtaking on a proposed two plus one carriageway.

– Westleigh Junction would be improved by widening the road to create an additional westbound lane through the junction. The existing Heywood Road roundabout would be improved by widening the approaches to increase capacity.

More information on the scheme is available here.

Consultation questionnaires can be completed online here, or sent to Transport Planning, County Hall, Exeter, EX2 4QD.
