Happy Halloween and Guy Fawkes in North Devon

Both evenings pass off quietly with almost no trouble, say police.

FEW tricks and plenty of treats were in store for North Devon’s police on Halloween and Bonfire Night as both passed by quietly.

Both nights have been notorious in the past for anti social behaviour, with vulnerable residents worried about irresponsible trick or treaters and people being reckless with fireworks.

But on October 31, police received only three calls ‘Halloween related’ across the entire North Devon sector – one involving a firework in South Molton, another of a firework thrown in Bideford and a report of anti social behaviour from youths in Bideford.

Police in North Devon had once again promoted their ‘Sorry, No Trick, No Treat, No Thanks’ campaign to enable people who didn’t wish to be bothered to display a poster on their door or windows.

On November 5, there was only one report of misuse of fireworks, but when police were called to Torrington Commons expecting a crowd of youths, it turned out to be adults acting responsibly and doing nothing wrong.

No incidents were reported in Barnstaple or Ilfracombe on either night.

“Halloween is a night that particularly vulnerable people are fearful of and will even switch their lights off as they are frightened of being called upon,” said Inspector Roger Bartlett.

“But it was a really quiet night from a police perspective, which is very pleasing, and only minor reports of anti social behaviour, indicating that if people were out trick or treating they were doing it in a very sensible way.”
