Increased ticket sales means increased footfall, says council.

SUNDAY SHOPPING: Half price parking for Sunday shoppers in Barnstaple ends after Sunday, April 13.

North Devon Council said the three-month trial, part of a campaign to boost the local economy during the off-peak season, had been a success.

Councillor Malcolm Prowse, executive member for economic regeneration, said: “We have been running the trial campaign to help encourage people into town on a Sunday, and I am pleased that the scheme appears to have worked.

“We have seen an increase in ticket sales, which in turn means there has been an increase in footfall through the town centre.

“So, with just this weekend to go on the half price parking, I hope as many shoppers as possible can make the most of this deal and see what Barnstaple has to offer.”

The Sunday parking offer has been running since Sunday January 12and has seen the £1 an hour price being cut to just 50 pence an hour at the town’s short-stay car parks.

After the trial campaign is finished, the council said it would analyse ticket sales, as well as other feedback from shoppers and businesses, to look at how parking can be made more attractive in the future.
