North Devon’s communities and economy have benefitted to the tune of £500,000 in the past
MORE than half a million pounds of grants and fund raising have boosted community projects in the region thanks to two grant schemes run by North Devon Council.
The past year has seen groups and organisations receive more than £110,000 that they have been able to use to attract another £440,000 in match funding.
This was possible thanks to the council’s ongoing Community Councillor Grants scheme, in which each district councillor has £1,000 per year to allocate to community projects within their wards.
More than £47,000 was issued in 2012/13, attracting more than £150,000 match funding.
The second is the Town and Parish (TAP) funding initiative set up by Devon County Council and North Devon Council to support projects between parishes, with £53,000 allocated in the past year, boosted by some £290,000 in match funding.
Councillor grants have helped to support a huge range of projects, including new kit for a disabled team at Barnstaple Football Club, new concrete ramps at Croyde skate park, a bronze plaque at the new memorial garden at RMB Chivenor plus defibrillators at Umberleigh and Atherington village halls, to name just a few.
The TAP fund has helped projects that include new equipment for the youth club shared by Kings Nympton, Chittlehamholt, Satterleigh and Warkleigh plus extra grass cutting and hedge trimming at Braunton, Ashford, Marwood, Heanton Punchardon and Georgeham, as well as play and village hall equipment for Fremington, Instow, Westleigh, Horwood, Lovacott and Newton Tracey parishes
“If you have a group or project that needs extra funds, call your district councillor,” said Councillor Yvette Gubb, executive member for community.
“This is the first year of TAP funding, which has proved very successful and given even more of a boost to local communities.”
