Housing development approved by councillors subject to all properties being bungalows.

OUTLINE planning permission has been granted for a development of 14 new houses in Westward Ho!, subject to the condition they are all bungalows.

Torridge District Council’s plans committee met on Thursday to discuss the application for land off Sandymere Road and Golf Links Road.

Residents speaking in objection to the proposals said they were concerned about building on a green site, the restricted access and parking problems.

Councillor Roger Tisdale said he felt any development in the area would have an affect on the ‘chaotic’ Heywood Roundabout.

“But a low level, single storey development is quite acceptable; I would be happy to support it,” he added.

Councillor Harold Ratledge added: “A lot of people my age like to down-size into bungalows and I agree this would be a good little development.”

Six councillors voted for the application to be passed with the condition that the properties remain as single storey and the hedgerows are retained.

Councillor Jane Whittaker, who was the only councillor to vote against, said: “I know there are people in my patch who are not happy with this and I cannot vote for it.”
