Archant

New attraction at Fremington Quay is already proving a hit with youngsters.

A wooden galleon has braved the blustery weather to sail into a permanent new home at Fremington Quay.

The striking vessel has already been boarded by swarms of young swashbucklers keen to sails the Seven Seas – with the Quay Café close by if it rains, of course.

The new £24,762 wooden play boat has been installed at the popular heritage site thanks to Devon Waste Management Landfill Tax contributions.

The ship, with climbing frame, slide and even a plank to walk, is the latest addition to the Heritage Centre and café site on the Tarka Trail, a popular spot for families, walkers and cyclists.

Fremington Parish Council chairman Rodney Cann, who led the bid to restore the road and quay at the former freight hub and Victorian port in the 1990s, said the latest extension to the Heritage Centre and the addition of the galleon brought the total investment on the site to some £750,000.

“Although the project has been a tremendous success, with a number of displays that were attractive to children, we recognised there was nothing provided specifically for them to play on,” he said.

“So we came up with the idea of this rather exciting play galleon.”
