FRIENDS of a Barnstaple rugby player who died suddenly in May have organised a fundraising day for his baby daughter.
Ian Locke, who died at the age of 34, had played for Barnstaple RFC since he was in his teens.
On Saturday, hundreds of friends and family are expected at the rugby club to celebrate Ian’s life, with a fancy dress rugby 7s tournament and an auction among the activities taking place.
More than 120 prizes have been donated for the auction and a raffle, with the top prize a Porsche driving experience day at Brand’s Hatch worth £600. Others include a signed rugby ball and shirts signed by Exeter Chiefs players.
There will also be fun for the kids, with a bouncy castle, ice cream, face painting and a number of stalls at the club.
One of the organisers of the event, Russell Jones, who used to play rugby with Ian for Barnstaple, said: “It was such a shock when he passed away – he was a loveable character and was well liked and a nice chap.
“His funeral was up in Yorkshire, where he had moved, so we wanted to have some sort of celebration of his life here.
“We want to raise money so that there is a fund for his daughter Lili. She’s only 1½ and she hasn’t got a dad now, so we’re aiming to raise a couple of thousand pounds for her.
“We’re doing everything we can to get families there and to make donations.”
The fundraising day will take place at Barnstaple RFC between 12-6pm.
