South West Water will provide 30 minutes free parking for those shopping in the village after businesses complain of lack of trade.

SOUTH West Water will be providing free parking to shoppers in Westward Ho! while sewerage works are undertaken in the village.

Last month the Gazette revealed how local traders felt they had been ‘cut off’ after signs for the road closure in Nelson Road did not advertise they were still open.

Traders and local councillors met with South West Water last week to discuss how they could alleviate the loss of business.

It was agreed South West Water would provide 20 free car parking spaces in the main car park for exclusive use of shoppers for 30 minutes during the closure.

It would also donate a lump sum to traders for a street party to be held once the road is opened, look at individual claims, and provide posters for traders’ shop windows.

A spokesman for South West Water said: “We do appreciate that sometimes work that we need to do can inconvenience local residents and businesses, especially when it involves a road closure.

“When this is the case we do try to work with those affected to minimise the impact of our work, as is the case here.

“We would also like to urge the people of Westward Ho! to continue to support their local businesses during this time.”
