Northam man put broom handle through window after a few drinks.

A NORTHAM man appeared in court on Friday charged with smashing the window of the community centre he was formerly chairman of.

David Pett, 41, of Morwenna Park Road, was discovered by police within the 10 ft metal fences of the United Community Centre in Northam.

He told officers he had smashed the rear kitchen window after becoming angry and spotting a broom handle which he put through the frosted pane.

Prosecutor Karen Ball said Pett had been removed as chairman on the community centre in 2012.

But Pett, who was unrepresented in court, said: “I wasn’t removed, I left because I didn’t agree with the way things were run.

“I have been involved with a number of community projects on Morwenna; I try to be an upstanding member of the community.”

Magistrates handed Pett a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered him to pay £100 compensation and a £15 victim surcharge.
