Rob Sadd, from Barnstaple, disappointed after 19 year career with army ends in reference full of mistakes - including the spelling of his name.

A CORPORAL who served in the British Army for nearly 19 years has been left embarrassed by a reference littered with mistakes.

Robert Sadd, 37, from Barnstaple, was medically discharged from the army in September 2013, and was given a testimonial assessing him as ‘exemplary’.

But the document, which is Mr Sadd’s only reference to show a prospective employer, is full of spelling mistakes – including his own name.

The testimonial, signed by Major R J Page of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, also wrongly stated he joined the army in 2004 when he actually joined in 1994.

Mr Sadd, who is a qualified mechanical engineer and has served several tours including Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and Iraq, said he’s struggled to find work.

“I’m supposed to show this to an employer, but it is embarrassing and I even lost out on one job because of it,” he said.

“I’m no spelling and grammar expert but it’s clearly full of mistakes – my 12-year-old daughter has picked out more than a dozen of them.”

Mr Sadd is now working for North Devon Council through a recruitment agency, who he said have ‘looked past’ his ‘shockingly written’ reference.

He wrote to his regiment in October to complain, and they sent him another testimonial, this time with his name and date of service corrected.

“But it’s still full of mistakes - it is just embarrassing,” said Rob, who has written to the regiment again but received no response.

A spokesman from the unit said: “We agree with Mr Sadd that his original reference fell short of our usual standards and we’d like to apologise for this.

“We sent him a second reference several months ago and offered to meet him in person, but did not receive a reply.

“We’d like to repeat this offer of assistance and urge him to contact us.”
