Council is hoping a commercial operator will take over running of the toilets during the summer and help save it £11,000 a year – but charges could be imposed.

North Devon Council is hoping a summer operator can be found to run the toilets at Saunton Beach and save the council £11,000 a year.

The busy public loos are cleaned and maintained by the council, but located on a private car park that visitors have to pay to enter, so the councillor intends to ‘test the waters’ and advertise the opportunity to run the facilities to commercial operators.

An operator would be able to charge for use of the toilets if they wished, but would also need to ensure they were cleaned regularly and were open 8am-8pm seven days a week. The council would take over again during the winter.

The council’s executive committee agreed last week to advertise the tender. Councillor Rodney Cann said it had other toilet facilities on or near private car parks, but none as expensive as Saunton: “It seems unfair on the council tax payer to be funding what is a commercial operation,” he said.

“They are expensive toilets in a private car park which cost us £40,000 a year to run.”
