PEOPLE whose homes and businesses are at risk of flooding, are being reminded of a special event taking place next month.

A free seminar is taking place on Friday, November 1 to highlight local flooding issues and help people plan for the future.

The event at Filleigh Village Hall is being organised by North Devon Council, and partners such as the Environment Agency, Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon County Council and North Devon Biosphere also attending.

Councillor Rodney Cann, the district council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “A number of our towns and villages were affected by last year’s flooding, such as Braunton, Barnstaple and Umberleigh.

“As a result, various initiatives have been carried out by partner organisations to address local environmental issues. This includes restorative work from Exmoor and Dartmoor to the estuary and we’ll be hearing more about this as part of the seminar.”

Cllr Yvette Gubb, Executive Member for Emergency Planning and Community, said flooding last Christmas had caught many people out by surprise.

“We now want to make sure communities are better prepared, should something similar happen in the future,” she said.

“This seminar will hopefully help do that, by explaining what’s been done as a result of last year’s flooding, what further plans there are and what individuals can do to help themselves.”

The event is from 10am to 1pm and places are limited. To book a place telephone 01271 388426 or email communities@northdevon.gov.uk
