NORTH Devon Council is hosting a flooding seminar at Filleigh Village Hall on Friday, November 1.

The council plus partners such as the Environment Agency, police and Devon County Council will report back on what has been done to tackle flooding in the area since the devastation last Christmas.

It aims to help North Devon communities find out about flooding issues and how to prepare for the future.

Areas affected by last year’s flooding included Braunton, Barnstaple, Bishops Tawton, Umberleigh, South Molton, North Molton, Brayford and Combe Martin.

“The widespread flooding in North Devon last Christmas caused major disruption, upset and damage, with many people fearing it could happen again,” said Executive Member for Environment, Councillor Rodney Cann.

“To address this, a significant amount of work’s been done by partner organisations to look at the flooding concerns and issues that were recorded, and this seminar will allow us to report back on that work.

“The Biosphere Reserve will also be highlighting various initiatives from Exmoor and Dartmoor to the estuary, which are designed to restore natural systems that will reduce the risk of flooding.”

Martin Hutchings, Devon County Council’s flood risk manager, is one of those who will be speaking at the seminar: “We have worked closely with our partners to investigate the flooding incidents in North Devon and the rest of the county, to establish what happened and why,” he said.

“Hopefully, this will answer some people’s questions and inform them what future preventative measures could be considered by the relevant authority.”

Other organisations involved in the seminar include Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, Natural England and North Devon Biosphere.

Anyone can attend the seminar by calling on 01271 388426 or email communities@northdevon.gov.uk.
