The Environment Agency issued the alerts this afternoon after heavy rainfall for much of the day.

THE Environment Agency has issued flood alerts across North Devon after persistent rainfall today.

The alerts coincide with a yellow warning of rain from the Met Office running until 11pm tomorrow (Friday), issued earlier this week.

Areas under the low level flood alters include the Upper and Lower Torridge, the Lower Taw and the Barnstaple, Braunton, Ilfracombe and Combe Martin areas.

Pete Fox, a spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “Heavy rain in South West England and South Wales on Thursday and into Friday means there is a risk of localised surface water and river flooding in the south west, the southern counties and parts of south Wales.

“The public can sign up for flood warnings and check the latest information on the Environment Agency’s website, or follow us on Twitter at @EnvAgency.”

The heavy rain is set to continue through the night and much of tomorrow.

A chief forecaster at the Met Office said: “Frontal bands pushing north-eastwards during the latter part of Thursday and during Friday will find their progress slowed up by a blocking area of high pressure located northeast of the United Kingdom.

“This will result in the associated rain-bearing systems becoming slow-moving over south-western parts of England and Wales leading to heavy and, at times, prolonged rainfall.

“40 to 60mm is expected to fall widely over southern parts of both Cornwall and Devon by the end of Friday with the potential for in excess of 100mm to fall over exposed southern and south-eastern up-slopes.”
