Service hopes to install 87 electric vehicle charging points around Devon and Somerset.

DEVON and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has successfully bid for £429,000 of government funding to install electric car charging points around the region.

Graham Rooke, station manager for Bideford, spent months working on the bid, which was submitted in September.

Mr Rooke said the service learned last week they had been successful in securing the funding which will install charging points at 87 locations throughout Devon and Somerset.

He said: “We’re looking to get more electric vehicles but we don’t have the charging infrastructure to fully invest in them.

“One of the latest vehicles we have tested did around 250 miles to the gallon, which will help us save considerable costs.”

Mr Rooke said he hoped the charging points would not only benefit the emergency services but also bring more people into the area.

“The government money will fund 75 per cent of the cost to install the points so we’re now going through a full tender process to find a contractor,” he added.
