Stations will hold open evenings next week for those interested in becoming a retained fire fighter.

THREE North Devon fire stations are appealing for on-call fire fighters to join the service with open days next week.

Lynton Fire Station is inviting anyone interested to come along to a drill night at the station in Burvill Street between 7pm and 9pm to find out more.

And Braunton Fire Station will be hosting an open evening for people to find out more about joining crews at Braunton or Woolacombe on Tuesday at 6.30pm.

Anyone interested must be over the age of 18, have a good level of fitness and strength and live or work within five minutes response time of the station.

A fire spokesman said: “Being on-call means that you provide a level of cover whilst at work or at home and when you are needed your pager will alert you to attend the station.

“People who can give cover during the day are particularly needed.

“Many people have primary occupations whilst on-call - either employed or self-employed, the service has examples of employees in factories, shops, takeaways and restaurants who are on-call fire fighters.

“The service will give people advice and help in preparing for both the written and practical assessments.

“Equally living with a disability is not automatically a barrier to operational fire fighting; it depends on the nature of the disability. Once you are recruited full training is provided.”
