Awards ceremony in Bideford will recognise those involved in the rescue of a family of three from raging flood water near Umberleigh last year.

FIRE FIGHTERS involved in the rescue of three people from raging floodwater near Umberleigh last year will be recognised at a special awards ceremony on Friday.

The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service’s North Devon group command awards will also honour members of the RNLI, police and a local farmer who took part in the rescue of the family of three on December 23.

The ceremony at Bideford Town Hall will recognise the unsung heroes of the emergency services, including awards for long service.

And former Gazette reporter of more than 40 years, Geoff Staddon, will receive the community service award for years of reporting on the work of the fire service.

Neil Blackburn, North Devon group commander, said: “I am privileged to have this opportunity to be able to recognise emergency responders and some members of the public for all the hard work they do in the community and also for courageous acts, beyond the call of duty, that have resulted in the saving of life.”

The awards ceremony will take place at Bideford Town Hall on Friday at 6pm.
