Three fire engines attended the reports of the smouldering pile in a barn at Chulmleigh.

FIRE CREWS were called to a report of 10 tonnes of wheat and 20 tonnes of sawdust smouldering inside a barn at Chulmleigh last night (Wed).

Three fire engines from Witheridge, South Molton and North Tawton as well as a water carrier from Barnstaple attended the scene at Stone Barton Farm around 8pm.

On arrival fire fighters discovered the pile was smouldering but not on fire and made arrangements for its removal.

Crews used a covering jet as a precaution while a mechanical digger was used to remove both piles to an open area.
