‘Faster’ broadband for Ilfracombe and Combe Martin

Communities set to be upgraded to faster copper lines.

ILFRACOMBE and Combe Martin are the latest North Devon communities set to receive new ‘faster’ broadband from BT.

The company has announced its latest upgrade to the ‘next generation’ broadband service delivered over copper lines for 36 towns and villages in the South West. By spring it says this will be available to 84 per cent of the region.

It says the improvements will make available download speeds of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps) – more than double the fastest speed previously available in those areas.

The latest ‘superfast broadband’ delivered over fibre optic lines is yet to arrive in North Devon, although Barnstaple and Bideford are set to be upgraded next year.

This can give typical download speeds of speeds of up to 80Mbps and many from the Ilfracombe business community have been calling for the service to be available in the town, with COMBEBusiness been calling on people to register interest and keep the pressure up.

Speaking of the copper upgrade, Jon Reynolds, BT’s South West regional director, said the faster broadband would deliver important benefits for people across the region.

“That’s why BT is determined to bring faster speeds to as many homes and businesses as possible, and we are keen to work with the public sector to find solutions for even the most challenging locations,” he said.

Once an area has been upgraded, some service providers automatically switch over. BT recommends people get in touch with their own provider for product and service information.
