Bideford man puts beloved monster truck up for sale.
TRAFFIC jams could be a thing of the past for the new owner of a monster truck – on sale to a motorist with a really big sense of adventure.
The Ford Bronco is being reluctantly sold by Northam man Anton Webster, who says the time has come to part with his beloved vehicle – a regular sight in the Bideford area – after 14 years.
The American car enthusiast, 70, said he bought the truck from a seller in West Buckland in 2000.
“It had been left in a field and was in a terrible state,” he told the Gazette.
“I bought it for the engine and gear box really but when I got it home I realised they were in quite good nick so I took the bodywork off and started to re-build it.
“I’ve been building trucks and American cars for about 40 years and decided to give it a new lease of life as a monster truck.”
Anton added a four-inch body lift as well as a suspension and lift kit from the world-renowned Summit Racing in Ohio.
“I’ve spent around £20,000 building it, including a £3,000 recently on a new set of five 40inch tyres,” he said.
“It’s only ever let me down once – when the starter motor went – that’s the only time it’s ever stopped.”
Anton, who is also selling up his hair salon in Bridgeland Street to move to Thailand, said the distinctive yellow truck – emblazoned with the motif ‘Life’s a beach’, had given him a lot of pleasure over the years.
“I’ve taken school leavers to their proms, and holidaymakers often ask to have their photos taken with it when it’s parked at the beach in Westward Ho!
“But the time has come after 14 years of fun,” he added.
The fully loaded 4x4 Eddie Bauer model went on sale this week for £6,000.
