Hundred-lot collection described by auctioneers as ‘one of the finest’.

AN impressive collection of period pottery made in Barnstaple is going up for auction in Gloucestershire next week.

More than 100 items produced by Brannam Pottery are going under the hammer at Wotton Auction Rooms on Tuesday, February 18.

The collection, dated from 1890 to 1930, is described by auctioneers as ‘one of the finest collections of pottery by the famous Barnstaple firm still in private hands’.

Brannam, which started life in potteries in North Walk and Litchdon Street in 1848, moved to a new factory in Roundswell in 1989 but ceased production in 2005.

The company counted the Royal family and Liberty’s among its clients.

Auctioneer Philip Taubenheim said the ‘remarkable’ collection featured everything from comical cats, frogs and dogs fondly known as ‘grotesques’ by collectors, to a huge variety of vases decorated in the sgraffito technique.

The collection can also be viewed at www.wottonauctionrooms.co.uk
