Bill Lock, 86, died two days after the collision on New Road in South Molton last weekend.

THE family of an elderly man who died after a collision in South Molton has paid tribute to a much loved father and grandfather.

William John Lock, known as Bill, died after his mobility scooter was involved in a collision with a car at the zebra crossing New Road, South Molton, on Saturday, January 11.

The 86-year-old was taken to North Devon District Hospital but died two days later with his family by his side.

Bill was a popular character in South Molton and often dropped into local businesses to have a coffee and chat with the staff.

His family paid tribute to him, saying he was a loved and well respected member of the community and touched the hearts of everybody he knew.

They said: “Bill was a much loved father, granddad and father-in-law, and lived life to the full.

“We are devastated that he was so tragically taken from us and our lives will never be the same again.”

Bill was born in Molland where he attended the local school before joining the family bakery and working there until he retired.

He and his wife Doreen brought up three daughters, and following Doreen’s death in 1995, Bill moved to South Molton in 2001 to live near his two youngest children.

He was a keen gardener, enjoyed playing darts and skittles and was interested in cars.

For years he ran a mini bus hire service with his wife, driving children to Anstey School and ferrying groups to evenings out and darts or skittles matches.

Police are renewing their appeal for witnesses to the collision and anyone who saw the Ford Focus or the mobility scooter in the moments before the collision is asked to call police on 101, quoting log 264 of January 11.
