Fake police con elderly North Devon man out of £9,000

11:45 25 July 2014

Police telephone scam claims another victim, this time be pretending the victim’s grandson is in jail.

AN 86-year-old man has been robbed of £9,000 after a telephone fraudster impersonating a police officer claimed they had his grandson in custody.

Police said the victim, who lives in the Combe Martin area, had been called by a man pretending to be a police officer.

He claimed the man’s grandson was in police custody and he needed to pay £9,000 into an account to get him released, which he did.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police via 101, or in confidence via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, quoting reference CR/092311/14.

Be alert for phone scams

It is the latest in a series of ‘police telephone scams’ reported by Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, with victims across the region defrauded of thousands of pounds – as much as £100,000 in some cases.

A common scam aimed at the elderly is for a telephone caller to pose as a Metropolitan police detective and claim there has been fraudulent activity in the victim’s bank account.

The caller requests bank account details, PIN numbers and other details, claiming it is a matter of urgency and to prevent further substantial losses.

The caller may try to convince the victim to package their bank cards or to visit their bank and withdraw substantial sums of cash, before waiting for a courier or similar.

Anyone who thinks they have been the victim of such a crime, or who would like more information can contact the police via 101.
