Environmental Health investigating ‘rat’ complaints at Barnstaple B&M store

Discount store under investigation and taking ‘preventative measures’

BARNSTAPLE’S B&M store is under investigation by Environmental Health after complaints about rats around the shop.

The discount store, in Coney Avenue, opened last year, and said it is taking ‘preventative measures’ to address the complaints.

Head of Environmental Health, Jeremy Mann, said: “We have received some complaints of rats around the B&M store, of which we are investigating.

“As a result, the store is taking preventative measures to address this, with our investigations still ongoing.”

In a statement, B&M said: “We take health and safety very seriously recognising that this means meeting all legal requirements as well as fulfilling a social obligation.

“We are co-operating fully with the Environmental Health who have identified the presence of rodents from the nearby canal within the perimeter of the store’s grounds.

“As a pre-cautionary measure, we have removed and disposed of all stock from the warehouse as well as undertaking a full clearance of the warehouse yard to minimize any risk of potential contamination.

“The store is also working very closely with Rentokil to ensure all possible precautions are being made. The Environmental Health is satisfied with all the steps currently being taken by the store to prevent and minimize the potential for rodent activity.”

  • It probably isn't helped by the fact that when cycling past in the mornings I see someone clearing the car park of rubbish with a leaf blower onto the footpath and stream. Although to be fair I don't stick around to see if it is picked up. There is a large amount of rubbish there from customers who just drop it the second they leave the shop.
