Emergency repairs made to Westward Ho! pebble ridge

EMERGENCY repairs have been undertaken on the pebble ridge at Westward Ho! after the high spring tides this morning (Sat).

The tide caused flooding on much of Northam Burrows and scattered pebbles all over the Pebble Ridge Adventure and Go Karts Centre once more.

Last month the spring tides whipped up by gale force winds saw the Pebble Ridge take a bashing.

With another high tide expected tonight, the village is preparing for flooding, despite the Environment Agency downgrading the risk from ‘danger to life’ to ‘flooding expected’.

Phil Clarke, of SEL Clarke Plant Hire, told the Gazette Torridge District Council has asked them to make emergency repairs to the ridge today.

He said: “We’ve been down there all day today with our biggest machine, a 34ft swing shovel and dump truck.

“I expect we will also be down there making repairs again tomorrow and possibly even Monday too.”

The region remains under a yellow weather warning for winds until 3am tomorrow, with gusts of up to 70mph expected.

A chief forecaster for the Met Office said: “A vigorous area of low pressure will run eastwards across Northern Ireland and southern Scotland on Saturday.

“Associated very strong winds together with bands of squally showers will affect many parts but particularly western areas.

“The combination of very strong winds, large waves and high tides will lead to hazardous conditions at times in some coastal areas.

“Winds will be easing somewhat by the early hours of Sunday.”

Elsewhere, damage to the North Devon area was relatively minor.

Pilton Park flooded again this morning, but not to the extent in which it flooded in January.
