BARNSTAPLE’S Sarah Rowe won’t forget this year’s Elephant Day after winning the town’s first silver elephant prize.

The small silver elephant, donated to the Elephant Day committee by Mark Parkhouse Antiques and Jewellery, was presented to Sarah by councillor Simon Harvey last week to recognise her outstanding knowledge of the Barnstaple elephant story.

The annual event, held in the Square, commemorates the discovery in 1844 of straight-tusked elephant fossils in Summerland Street.

Some tusk and bone fragments are at Barnstaple Museum, while whole teeth were taken to the Natural History Museum.

“I was quite excited when I heard I’d won,” said Sarah. “I think it will go above the telly or in the cabinet with all my other treasures.”

And Cllr Harvey was very positive about this year’s event in July.

“A lot of people have said to me that they thought it was probably the best since we started it seven years ago,” he said. “We’ve already got a lot of people signed up for next year so that could be even better again.”

Anyone who would like to be involved in next year’s event, set for July 4, 2015, can call Simon on 07817 084812.

The committee is also always no the lookout for new members. Anyone interested can come along to a meeting on the last Wednesday of every month at 7pm, held at the Age Concern office in Diamond Street.
