The 12-year-old spent many hours feeling the sealed packets in his search for the elusive lego figure.

A YOUNG lad from Fremington has struck gold after a worldwide Willy Wonka-type search for an elusive Lego figure.

Eben Morrish Croad spent months visiting supermarkets before school and making late night trips to stores in his search for the Mr Gold figure.

The 12-year-old Pilton Community College student even had a map on his bedroom wall detailing where each of the 5,000 figures Lego released had been found across the globe.

The limited edition characters come in a miniature sealed packet, with no way of telling which character lies inside until opened.

But after feeling thousands of packets to guess which figure was inside, Eben finally had a change of luck in Asda Bideford.

“I felt the hat and the cane through the packet and I just knew it was him,” said Eben.

“Everybody told me to give up and that I would never find Mr Gold, but I had that little bit of hope.

“When I first opened it I was shaking; I saw it was him and shouted ‘hell yeah!’ and started dancing.”

And the youngster has put the find down not only to his skills at feeling out the figures, but also as to a stroke of fate.

“My phone got smashed that day, and if it hadn’t happened I would have rung my friends and met them in town instead of going to Asda,” said Eben.

“Then I may never have found Mr Gold.”

Eben, who has been collecting the miniature Lego series since he was nine-years-old, managed to put the figurine together without opening the sealed packet.

He became the 152nd person in the UK to discover a Mr Gold figure and is now keeping it safe in his clutches, as others sell theirs on eBay for hundreds-of-pounds.

The figure will take pride of place among his full collection of Lego characters from series one to 10 which he displays proudly in his bedroom.
