The offence was committed while she was on bail for drunk and disorderly behaviour in the town just nine days previously.

A WOMAN found stopping traffic on Bideford bridge told police officers she had been told to ‘hold the line’, North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday.

Tracey Avent, 42, of Kimberley Park, Northam, pleaded guilty to two offences of being drunk and disorderly in a public place last month.

On July 10, at around 1.45am, she was discovered by police banging on the door of her ex-partner’s house and had to be restrained after becoming violent.

Nine days later, while on bail for that offence, Avent was found heavily intoxicated and stopping traffic on the Bideford Bridge and was moved on by police.

But officers returned to the scene five minutes later and found her back in the road, before she walked up the High Street and lay in the road at the junction to Mill Street.

“She didn’t think she was doing anything wrong,” said Ben Winzer, prosecuting.

Avent, who was unrepresented, told magistrates she had just ended a 23-year marriage and had been drinking while on antidepressants.

Magistrates ordered her to pay a fine of £65 in total for the two offences as well as costs of £85 and a £20 victim surcharge.
