The 32-year-old received a lengthy driving ban after deciding to drive home from the pub when more than twice the legal limit.

A PUB chef has pleaded guilty to drink driving after drinking cider and shandies then driving his car into a lamp post.

Darren Baddick, of Strand Lane, Ashford, escaped with minor injuries after he decided to drive home from the pub in Braunton on May 13.

The 32-year-old’s Vauxhall Astra van was written off after it collided with a lamp post at the entrance of Chivenor Caravan Park.

Police arrived at the scene and arrested Baddick after he blew a positive breath test.

In custody, he was found to be more than twice the legal limit and admitted he had drunk three-to-four pints of cider followed by three-to-four cider shandies.

He said he went to his vehicle after playing snooker all evening to get a coat so he could walk home, but then decided to drive.

Zara Svensson, defending, said Baddick admitted the alcohol clearly contributed to accident and wouldn’t have occurred otherwise.

She said Baddick could not explain why he had decided to drive home, as he normally would have made other arrangements.

Magistrates disqualified Baddick from driving for two years and ordered him to undertake 60 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
