Man ‘remorseful’ after second drink driving charge in six years

A CREDITON man has been banned from driving for more than three years after flipping his car near High Bickington.

Maurice Frederick Wonnacott, 63, of Parliament Street, was driving north along the road at about 9pm on March 8 when he clipped the nearside verge and rolled his Land Rover Defender over onto its roof near the Portsmouth Arms, North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday.

Wonnacott was able to free himself from the car but did need to be taken to hospital for tests, where he gave a breathalyser reading of more than two and a half times the legal limit.

Wonnacott, representing himself, had been banned in 2008 for a similar offence, meaning he faced a minimum disqualification of three years.

He had been in the area to watch his son play rugby and had consumed three pints, he said.

“I feel pretty remorseful of how stupid I was because it falls on my family,” he said. “The last four months have been a nightmare.”

Wonnacott was banned from driving for 38 months and ordered to pay £487 in fines, costs and a victim surcharge.
