20-month ban for Braunton man who was two and a half times over the limit

A BRAUNTON man whose crashed car blocked a bridge in Croyde after a drink driving accident has been handed a 20-month driving ban.

Jason Roome, 43, of Exeter Road caught the edge of the bridge on St Mary’s Road with the corner of his Audi A4, which skewed across the road and blocked it in the early hours of the morning on January 2, North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday.

Police were called to the Manor Inn, where Roome had managed to push his car to, where he admitted to being the driver.

He gave a lowest breathalyser reading of 89 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – two and half times the legal limit.

Tim Hook, for the defence, said that Roome had been out drinking the previous evening before sleeping on a friend’s sofa. Roome then woke up and drove to another friend’s house, but that friend was not in so Roome started to drive back again. He didn’t think he would be over the limit.

Mr Hook said that Roome had been ‘entirely frank and cooperative with the police’.

Roome was ordered to pay £690 in fines and costs and handed a 20-month driving disqualification. Sitting magistrate Natalie Lock offered him the Drink Driver Rehabilitation Course.
