More than 120 people turned out on Friday to help give Northam Burrows a spring clean.

The clean ups organised by Burrows ranger Sarah Fairbairn saw a total of more than 80 full black bags filled with rubbish.

Students from Ilfracombe Junior School, Kingsley School in Bideford and St Margaret’s in Northam all joined in the event.

Volunteers from Petroc also got their hands dirty, as part of their ‘project life, community action’ project.

A marine waste survey was conducted by Sallie McKay Roper of Tesco Bideford, and Mrs Recycle held informal workshops in the Biosphere inflatable dome.

Sue Everington, a local resident who joined in the clean up, said: “I walk my dogs along Westward Ho! beach regularly and the rubbish is an eyesore and dangerous.

“If we can do our bit to help, we’re more than happy to.”

Councillor Andrew Eastman also rolled up his sleeves to join in with the work.

He said: “What an absolute delight it was to see such a dedicated effort put in today and to see groups coming from a long way to help this very worthy project.

“Thank you to everyone who contributed.”
