A newspaper cartoonist from North Yorkshire has offered his unique take on Damien Hirst’s Verity.

Ilfracombe was buzzing with visitors over the weekend and the new arrival was very much the talk of the town.

But while local people continue to debate the merits of the 66.5ft bronze statue, illustrator Doug Lawrence from the village of Cowling said he was inspired to capture the controversy in a series of sketches.

Doug, who draws a weekly cartoon for the Colne Times in Lancashire, said the nearest his area had to a Verity was small bronze bust of Titanic bandmaster Wallace Hartley outside Colne Municipal Hall.

“We also have a bronze statue of a shuttle to celebrate the town’s connection with the cotton mills. This caused controversy – so I can imagine Verity will generate a few letters in the local press. Perhaps I should set up an eBay site selling ‘I heart Verity’ and ‘I don’t heart Verity’ T-shirts,” he joked.

Doug said he wasn’t a great fan of Damien Hirst but thought the statue would probably attract a lot of visitors.

He said: “It looks rather like something you might find in a medical textbook or a Stalinist-era monument to the heroic mothers of the motherland and having to look at it every day might make me want to change the route of my daily walk. Many Parisians will tell you the best view of Paris is from the top of the Eiffel Tower, as it’s the only place you can go in Paris and not see it.”
